AB OBJECTIVE: To study the epidemiological pattern of HIV infection in Hong
Kong. METHODS: Epidemiological data on HIV infection is collected
through the following channels: (1) a voluntary HIV/AIDS reporting
system, (2) unlinked anonymous screening of selected communities with
varying levels of AIDS-related risk behaviour, (3) blood screening at
the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service. RESULTS: As of the
end of December 1993, a cumulative total of 416 cases of HIV infection
have been reported to the Department of Health, of which 92 had
developed AIDS. Majority (92.8%) were male and about two-thirds were
ethnic Chinese. Seventy-three percent of the infected persons acquired
the disease through sexual contact. The homo/bisexual to heterosexual
ratio of the cumulative cases was 1.17:1, but this ratio was reversed to
1:2 if only the new infections diagnosed in the year 1993 was analysed.
Since 1985, over 1 million units of blood have been screened by the
transfusion service and 29 positive cases were diagnosed. Four positive
results, on the other hand, were detected under the unlinked anonymous
screening system, covering a total of over 30,000 tests.
